PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Are you looking forward to earn an MS/PhD degree in one of the cutting edge research areas in Computer Science? Or are you interested in a short period of internship? Keep reading.

Aspirants for PhD degree

There are two conditions that you must satisfy:

  1. Academic records: You should have a consistent good academic records throughout the entire carrier, which is at least 75% (or 8.0 CGPA) in all examinations.
  2. Eligibility: You should have a basic degree in Computer Science & Engineering/Information Technology/Electronics and Communication Engineering/Electrical Engineering.

For pursuing Ph.D. at IIT Kharagpur, there are the following categories that one can think of:

  1. Regular with institute assistantship
  2. Individual fellowship (CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICAR/INSPIRE etc.)
  3. Sponsored
  4. Ph. D. through project

Regular with Institute Assistantship

Minimum qualification required for admission to the Ph. D. program is:

  • A degree in CSE/IT/ECE/EE with a valid GATE score above the cut off level as decided by the Senate from time to time or NET fellowship.
  • M. Tech. (Master of Technology) or M.E. (Master of Engineering) in CSE/ITEEE/ECE.
  • All candidates seeking admission to the Ph. D. program have to possess 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.0 in 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering (subject to change and as decided by the Department).
Note:
  1. A person who is in employment and is applying for Institute Assistantship and selected for admission, he/she must resign and produce the acceptance of resignation by the employer at the time of joining.
  2. The value of the Institute Research Assistantship shall be as per MHRD norms.
  3. No Research Student shall be permitted to receive any emoluments, salary, stipend or any other scholarship/assistantship during the tenure of award.

Individual Fellowship (CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICAR/INSPIRE etc.)

  1. Minimum qualification required for admission to the Ph. D. program is a degree in B. Tech. / B.E. /M. Tech / M.E.
  2. All candidates applying for Individual Fellowship category must have valid award letter with fellowship issued by the respective fellowship agency (i.e. CSIR/UGC/ DST/DBT/ICMR etc.).
  3. Candidates applying for Ph. D. program under Individual Fellowship category shall have to possess 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.0 in 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering (subject to change and as decided by the Department).
Note: Candidates admitted under Individual Fellowship category shall not be entitled to award of Institute Assistantship.

Sponsored

  1. Minimum qualification required for admission to the Ph. D. program is a degree in B. Tech. / M. Tech.
  2. Persons who possess minimum prescribed qualifications and are in service in any of the following establishments shall be eligible for admission to Ph. D. program as sponsored candidates:
    1. Defence or other ministries of the Government of India or any other government organizations.
    2. Established industrial research and developement organizations.
    3. Autonomous bodies and public undertakings.
    4. Universities/colleges
    5. Reputed industries as may be recognized by the Institute
  3. Candidates applying for Ph. D. program under Sponsored category shall have to possess requisite marks/grades in qualifying examination and job experience as shown below:
    1. 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.0 in 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering (subject to change and as decided by the Department).
    2. Minimum of two-year job experience in an organization of repute.
Note:
  1. An intending sponsored candidate must submit his/her application in prescribed form for admission through his/her employer, who will forward the same to the Institute with suitable endorsement.
  2. A sponsored candidate selected for admission shall be required, at the time of joining the Institute, to produce certificate in the prescribed form from the employers to the effect that he/she has been officially released from his duties for purpose of joining the program and has been granted leave for the required period that his services shall be retained with the employer.
  3. In the case of a sponsored candidate admitted as such to the Ph. D. program, the minimum residential requirement is one year.
  4. A candidate sponsored by an industry, an R&D organization, educational institution or a Government organization having adequate research facilities may be allowed to work externally subject to his/her fulfilling all such conditions prescribed in the Regulations.

Ph. D. through Project

  1. Minimum qualification required for admission to the Ph. D. program is a degree in B. Tech. / M. Tech.
  2. Persons who possess the minimum prescribed qualifications and are working in a sponsored project of the Institute (i.e. under auspices of SRIC of the Institute) shall be eligible for admission to the Ph. D. program under project category.
  3. Candidates applying for Ph. D. program under Project category shall have to possess 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.0 in 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering (subject to change and as decided by the Department).
Note:
  1. An intending candidate must submit his/her application in prescribed form for admission through Principal Investigator, Head of the Department/Centre/School and Dean (SRIC) with suitable endorsement.
  2. The minimum remaining period of the project as well as tenure of the project employee should be at least 2 years from the date of joining the Ph. D. program.

Aspirants for MS (by Research) degree

The Institute has a provision for pursuing MS (master of Science by Research) in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering. Following are the eligibility criteria for this.

  1. Minimum qualification required for admission to the Ph. D. program is a degree in B. Tech. in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering/Electronics and Communication Engineering.
  2. Persons who possess the minimum prescribed qualifications and are working in a sponsored project of the Institute (i.e. under auspices of SRIC of the Institute) shall be eligible for admission to the Ph. D. program under project category.
  3. Candidates applying for Ph. D. program under Project category shall have to possess 75% marks (or a CGPA of 8.0 in 10-point scale) in the qualifying examination in Engineering (subject to change and as decided by the Department).
  4. The minimum remaining period of the project as well as tenure of the project employee should be at least 2 years from the date of joining the MS program.
Note:
  1. There is no specific duration for MS program.
  2. In general, it is at least 2 years and maximum within five years from the date of registration to complete an MS program.

Summer/Winter Interns

  1. The students should be with an excellent academic background in 10th and 12th standard.
  2. Should be from a reputed engineering colleges in India and abroad.
  3. The more importance will be given to the pre-final year students.
Note:
  1. Internship program should be for at least for 50 days.
  2. An accommodation in IIT Hostel can be provided subject to the availability and on the payment basis.
  3. A small internship grant can be awarded to the meritorious students subject to the availability of funds.
