Can Cryptography Help Addressing The Privacy Challenge?

Speaker: Bart Preneel Abstract: This talk discusses how the advances in technology are gradually erasing our privacy. It attempts to define privacy and debunk some widely held beliefs about privacy concepts. Next we evaluate how privacy enhancing technologies can complement an approach based on regulation. In particular, we present a few examples of data minimization that fall under the broader concept of privacy by design. We conclude by assessing the potential impact of privacy risks for society at large. About the speaker: Bart Preneel received the Electr. Eng. and Ph.D. degrees from the KU Leuven (Belgium). He is a full professor in the KU Leuven COSIC research group which has 65 members. He has authored more than 400 scientific publications and is inventor of 4 patents. His main research interests are cryptography, information security and privacy; he frequently consults on these topics. Bart Preneel is president of the IACR (International Association for Cryptologic Research). He has served as program chair of 14 international conferences and he has been invited speaker at more than 80 conferences in 36 countries. |
