TOPIC : VALUE–ADDED UTILITY SERVICE IN VERNACULAR LANGUAGE IN MOBILE PHONES
BRIEF IDEA : Almost all of us are not only aware but also use the Value-Added Services present in our mobile phones provided by our service providers. They include various facilities starting from the highly used sms facility to providing important information like railway and airlines reservation status, latest news, ranging through aspects of entertainment like Television schedules, Astrology, cricket scores to such things as ring tone download, picture message download etc. The activity here takes place through messages, which serve as front end to a query-response structure in the background between the user and the data repository.
However, the first problem lies in the fact that most of these VASs are of entertainment, or at most of infotainment value (information + entertainment) value. It would be very helpful if we can have utility information through our mobile sets, like the phone number of a particular hospital, or the police station or an educational institution. The second problem lies in the fact that these services are provided in English and therefore attract only those few people who know the language. A large section of people who are users of the mobile but are not that conversant with English that much are not able to make use of this service. For example, the people in rural India often just dial numbers to call reducing the mobile phone into a movable landline phone set. Sometimes, the set contains the menus and messaging in vernaculars, but the value added services stay out of reach.
Our project intends to make value added utility services available in vernaculars so that these services can be of use to millions of people across India.we are concerned to put forward utility services like information about educational institutions across West Bengal or information about Health services like hospitals, pathology centers, blood banks.Broadly speaking, it would really unleash the true power of the cell phone and also allow the people who do not know English to feel this power within their handsets.
The coding to develop this application was done in J2ME in CLDC 1.0 configuration and using profile MIDP 2.0.
