B.Tech. Program

This is an eight semester course spanning four years. Admission to the B.Tech. Program is strictly on the basis of the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) rank.

M.Tech. Program

This is a four semester program with two semesters devoted to thesis research. Applicants should have a B.Tech. or equivalent degree and must possess a valid GATE score. Candidates having professional qualifications recognized by AICTE, like AMIE, are also eligible to apply. In addition, candidates sponsored by an industry/R&D organization are also considered. Sponsored candidates must have at least 60% marks in the qualifying examination and at least two years of work experience. A GATE score is not mandatory for sponsored candidates.

Integrated M.Tech. Program

This is a 5 year dual-degree, integrated B.Tech and M.Tech program. Admission to the course is strictly on the basis of the JEE rank.

M.S. Program

Project staff working full-time in sponsored/consultancy projects in IIT Kharagpur can apply for admission to the MS program in the department in the Autumn and Spring semesters. The selection is through a written test (syllabus given below) and interview. Candidates unable to clear the written test and interview continue to work as project staff and may appear for the entrance test again in subsequent semesters depending on the remaining tenure of the project. An MS student is required to complete around 12--16 credits of coursework, clear a comprehensive viva-voce at the end of the course work showing competency in basics of CSE (syllabus given below) and in specific subjects the student has taken during his/her MS, and do research culminating in a submitted thesis.

Ph.D. Program

This is a research intensive program where the student is expected to conduct original work in an area of Computer Science and Engineering under the guidance of one or more faculty member. Candidates with B.Tech. or equivalent degree must have a valid GATE score. A GATE score is not mandatory for candidates with M.Tech. or equivalent degree or for sponsored candidates. The PhD entrance procedure includes a wtitten test, the syllabus for which is given below.

A student admitted to the Ph.D. program will have to clear a written Comprehensive Test within two years of joining the program. The test is held once every semester. A student must pass the test with at least 60% marks within a maximum of two attempts. The requirement of clearing the comprehensive test is in addition to other course work and research requirements as decided by the doctoral committee of the student. Financial Assistance

M.Tech. and Ph.D. students who have passed the GATE examination receive institute scholarships as per UGC norms. In addition, there are other opportunities of financial support for students. Fellowships offered by a few reputed companies like IBM and Infosys are available to Ph.D. students. The current value of these fellowships are approximately Rs.15,000 per month. Sponsored research projects in the department also support students through employment as project staff. Salary for these positions is based on qualification, experience, and fund availability.
